? 先找轉折 But, there is a big but.

But是一個轉折詞，同樣表示轉折的詞語還有：However, though, while, still, whereas, nevertheless, yet, on the other hand等等。

轉折詞可以幫我們省半句話。如果大家看過非誠勿擾之類的節目，一定會記得女生無情拒絕的臺詞：“我覺得你人不錯，性格也很好，工作穩定，但是……”然后，就沒有然后了。其實在英語的閱讀中，"But"也有完全相同的功能。

比如這樣一句話：

By far the most popular and most consumed drink in the world is water, but it may come as no surprise that the second most popular beverage is tea.

同學們有沒有看到這個大大的But？看到它的時候，果斷記住，前面一半的句子，都不重要。這就意味著在考試的時候，你可以完全無視前半句話，因為它根本不是考點所在。

覺得不過癮？我們再來一句：

Although tea was originally grown only in certain parts of Asia – in countries such as China, Burma and India - it is now a key export product in more than 50 countries around the globe.

這里有一個小小的插入語，先放一邊，Although是雖然的意思，所以這句話的前半句，直到插入語結束，都不重要。都不重要。都不重要。重要的事情說三遍。

這樣一來，實際考試需要閱讀的部分就大大地縮短了。

? 再剪修飾 Clauses are often worthless.

語法相對扎實的同學會知道，英語的語句，尤其是書面語中，會有大量的從句。從句很多時候起到的是修飾作用，其本身會對信息的某一個要點進行細節的補充。因此，在PTE的考試中，基本可以奉行一個原則：從句的修飾部分，都可以無視。比如這句話：

Countries that grow tea, however, need to have the right tropical climate, which includes up to 200 centimetres of rainfall per year to encourage fast growth, and temperatures that range from ten to 35 degrees centigrade.

整句話的后半部分，是由which引導的修飾性從句，對整體的意思不會有任何影響，可以無視。我們再來一句：

By far the most popular and most consumed drink in the world is water, but it may come as no surprise that the second most popular beverage is tea.

這句話中，that起到的是替代賓語的作用，因此前面的套句部分可以完全無視。

? 最后剝栗子 There is no such thing as such...

Such as在英語里是一個舉例用的連接詞，相似的還有for example, for instance等等。舉例的實際意義在于用實據來說明證明觀點。不過在PTE考試時，請抱著“栗子是什么？好吃嗎？”的態度來面對Summarize written text，所有出現的栗子，哦不，是例子，都不重要。好了，閑話少說，我們來剝栗子：

They also need to have quite specific geographical features, such as high altitudes to promote the flavour and taste of the tea, and land that can offer plenty of shade in the form of other trees and vegetation to keep the plants cool and fresh.

雖然很長，但是兩只栗子，很輕松地被我們剝了出去。我們來繼續做采栗子的小姑娘：

There is green tea, jasmine tea, earl grey tea, peppermint tea, tea to help you sleep, tea to promote healing and tea to relieve stress; but above all, tea is a social drink that seems to suit the palates and consumption habits of human beings in general.

好了，前面這一堆關于茶的栗子，都可以被迅速地清理出去

? 使用 , and/ , because/ , but 之類的連接詞聯系兩句話。

? 使用 ；直接聯系兩句話。

以上這兩種寫作的方式都有一定的危險性，畢竟如果被抽查到的話，考官很難對這樣的句型給出滿分的評價。

? 使用從句來鏈接：這個方式本身沒有問題，只是在內容比較多的時候，容易產生語法錯誤，尤其是當使用which/that指代的時候，單復數的問題，以及使用if/when的時候，過去現在時態的問題。

另外，這幾種寫法一般會導致字數較多，尤其在文中要點比較多的時候，容易造成字數上的壓力。這里，我們給大家分享一個更為簡潔有效的方法：使用介詞。

例子1：

如果我們有這樣一句話，括號里的部分是我們希望補充的內容： Starting a company takes hard work. ( + Most people have little money for this.)

? 79分精煉寫法：Starting a company with little money takes hard work.  

這里我們并不需要再用一句新的句子來承載含義，只需要簡短地一句話，with little money，說明意思就可以了。

例子2

Setting up a business requires not only good ideas but also determination and skill. ( + The business is starting from nothing. The skill is about influencing people.)

? 79分精煉寫法：Setting up a business from nothing requires not only good ideas but also determination and skill to influence people.

追求替換詞句的同學，也可以使用from zero來代替原文中的from nothing。

例子3

Despite the risk, he had encouragement. (The risk was in his decision to set up a new business. His wife encouraged him.)

? 79分精煉寫法：Despite the risk in his decision to set up a new business, he had encourage from his wife.

可以說介詞是英語的靈魂，通過它我們可以任何地補充信息。在這里，我們只要確保介詞后面跟的基本是名詞形態，那么從PTE的語法上來說就不會有太大的問題。

例子4

最后一個例題，大家可以自己想一想，練練手，別急著看答案~

People who set up companies take big risks, but they often gain significant rewards. ( + People invest their own money in these companies. The rewards are a result of their effort.)
